A couple of months ago, I was on everyone’s favorite website, Dragguam, browsing through the Sporting Goods classifieds section; I stumbled upon a thread that had “jiujitsu gis” for sale. I had just recently gotten back into “rolling” with some friends and thought it would be a good idea to pick up an extra gi. I sent the guy a message about them and after trading more messages back and forth, I found that he could get some custom Hafadaze patches made. I later found out he was Glenn Calairo, formerly of Mogfog Dededo, now residing in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Really small world, because I remembered working with his mother a couple of years back at a local hotel… I would tell her how much I loved cars and whatnot, and she would tell me about her son who was into the same kinda stuff. Now, we’re here working together with gis and patches. Good stuff. Anyway, he calls his gi/kimono line, Technique Brand. Technique Brand’s first kimono is called “THE GHURA.” Originally, he wanted to use the GHURA name for the colors – blue, white, gray, white, and brown… One of his good friends, Marco Tyrtl Barsana, said “affordable,” so he ended up adapting that into the name. For those who aren’t familiar with local lingo, “GHURA” is a term for affordable housing here on Guam. That transcended into the price of the kimono as well, which is priced right around $140.
So how did he get into this whole kimono biz? Jiujitsu players will know of another Guam born company, which has become pretty big-time in recent years, Shoyoroll. Glenn actually supported that particular brand before it established itself into a jiujitsu line. In fact, he’s known Bear (owner of Shoyoroll) since high school. When Glenn finally found some time to give jiujitsu some time, he found himself hooked… he went looking for a kimono and had an extremely difficult time finding a Shoyoroll one – because well – it’s gotten that big and popular. He thought to himself, “Shoot, how hard can it be to get my hands on one. I know ‘The Man’…” He couldn’t even use the”Bro, we go way back, like the time you rode in the trunk of my car way back.”
With several failed attempts at trying to score a SYR kimono, he started researching. One of his chelus mentioned that most kimonos are made in Pakistan. Thankfully, with the power of Google, Glenn was able to find a vendor that could make his kimono idea a reality. Glenn sent him some money and crossed his fingers that he wasn’t going to get saki’ed. Three weeks later, his first kimono sample shows up… The box looked like it had been through hell and back (Pakistan to Hawaii, yeah good comparison, lol). The box was definitely kicked, dropped, rolled, you name it… but it made it’s way to it’s final destination. Opening the haggard box, Glenn found absolutely beautiful samples!!
As you can see from the pictures, the kimono is very well built. I can’t give a 100% accurate review of how it feels on the mat (as I haven’t used it yet), but it feels fairly light and comfortable. Glenn’s goal was to produce a kimono that was simple, not overly priced, and easily accessible to all. He designs all of them himself, which explains the simplicity. If you’re interested in getting your hands on one, they’re all pre-ordered with an estimated delivery time of 3-5 weeks.
