Over the weekend, Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) swept through southern Philippines with strong winds and heavy rains, unleashing a wrath of flash floods and landslides onto unsuspecting citizens. The hardest hit were the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Ilagan, Mindanao, in which families and homes were left either dislocated or destroyed. With the casualty toll at 900 and still rising, Sendong has proved to be the country’s deadliest typhoon in three years.
