CAR CULTURE

Sweet sticker bomb bomb…

Stickers have always been a very popular commodity in the car tuning culture. Hordes of car tuners all over the world have grown accustomed to putting stickers on their rides for various reasons – to represent their car club, to “show off” to people what type of brand name parts they have, or simply just because they like the look. I can remember the very first sticker that I wanted to purchase… Remember when Peggy’s/MDR Motorsports was the car shop to go to? They had a whole bunch of stickers for sale of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes fame pissing on whatever he wanted to piss on…

Man, I was just a kid without a car and driver’s license…. but I knew that this sticker would be on my ride once was I able to get one! After I finally got my first ride, I actually didn’t even get one of these… but I do remember slapping on a free Audiobahn sticker I got at one of the early Autojams in the early 2000s. I didn’t even have any Audiobahn products, but just the fact that I had a sticker on it made me felt cool! Seems kinda sad doesn’t it? haha!

Exhibit A: Standard lip, with roll call on window, and car club banner

Anyway, one of the latest trends in the car world has been what we call “sticker bombing.” Previously, car enthusiasts would get some branded sticker and stick it over a flaw or imperfection on his/her vehicle’s body – like a band-aid. It covered the imperfection… but if the imperfection was in a weird place – say the middle of a door – then it just looked plain stupid. However, people still did it anyway, go figure… Then one deep dark Rebecca Black-ed Friday, some Einstein decided to go ahead and not only cover that one imperfection, but cover the whole body piece. So if Joefis-tuner had a gash on his front lip, he would cover it up with a sticker and go ahead and cover the rest of the lip too. “Bombing” a particular car part with stickers eventually became an art… sorta like how graffiti artists tag up plain white walls.

Exhibit B: Lips, fenders, hoods, windows, you name it… They’ll cover it.

Check out the roof rack with the spotlights. This guy probably goes hunting for binadu too… and there’s probably fresh tataga in the brown container.

Exhibit C: Full body

Don’t have enough stickers? Get a one piece! This is how crazy it’s gotten. People are getting full vinyl sticker jobs instead of putting their cars into body shops for resprays… Check out Hafa Adai Signs in Hagatna if you want something like this done. They can hook it up!

If you want to see more examples live and in person, be sure to check out UPSHIFT STANCEFEST on July 3, 2011 at the Guam Raceway Park!

So this comes to what I had briefly mentioned on a Facebook update on our official page, for those that caught it… I gave this sticker bomb a try so I could feel cool and jump on the bandwagon.

These are the stickers I actually started out with… A whole bunch saved in my drawer from random places.

The damage. I bought the truck like this… rims and all.

Materials needed: Terry cloth, quick detailer, and of course the dustpan and walis ting ting!

SPOOOOOOON! I originally wanted to use this as a base, but later thought differently and changed my mind.

After a whole bunch of peeling, this is what I came up with. I’m still on the ropes about this… honestly I think it kinda looks dumb but I’m going to leave it on for a bit; don’t want those stickers to go to a complete waste! haha!

I kinda ran out of colorful stickers, so I had to stop here. Still need to fill in the rest… Doesn’t it sorta look like an unfinished tattoo sleeve? All I need now is a Filipino star, Koi fish, and some wind bars….

And cleaning up of course…

Now then, that was fun! So if you see my Taco on the road with the bling bling dubs and the sticker bombed rear flare, give me a honk or a WHAT!!! I’ll be sure to say wassssssssssup!
