CAR CULTURE

The AutoFiesta Balutan

Alright guys, it’s been awhile since we’ve had some real “car coverage” on here… How long has it been? Months? Yeah, I think so. The last time we posted anything remotely interesting about the car culture here on island was when we had the return of the GU’NITEZ last December. I admit, the coverage was severely lacking… because well, interest on my part (and probably everyone else on the team) was lacking as well. This might sound like a broken record, but things have slowed down dramatically in the scene, so to speak; Then one night I was magically invited to a Whatsapp chatroom with a whole bunch of guys from different crews and friend bases… they were talking about randomly throwing up a meet at Infusion Cafe in Tamuning to get some things going again. I was sorta ehhhh about the idea but it sounded like a good one. They went ahead and did it anyway and asked for some assistance in promoting what eventually turned out to be the Stance Appeal x HafaDaze meet at Home Depot. Remember that? Yea. That was good night. Things in the scene were brewing again and it was cool to meet up with everyone and see some new car stuff from all the different groups. The seed of interest was planted again….

and thennnnnnnn, to make a super duper long story short – we were given the opportunity to host the car show portion of this year’s 76/Circle K Smokin’ Wheels event. For those who aren’t familiar with Smokin’ Wheels – it’s pretty much a roundabout of motorsports events that are held at the Guam International Raceway every year – featuring both local and off-island competitors – drag racing, drifting, off-roading, and of course hard-parking. haha! So one night we get a phone call asking if we would be interested in doing the show. We had like a day or two to decide;Β  After a short presentation by our very own Arthur Abuda – the mind behind all the madness of the AutoFiesta – he was able to convince us all – myself, Jaime, Irwin, and Alex to throw our hats in the ring. We said F IT, let’s do this. YOLO. haha! We felt like The Avengers and excitedly accepted the “challenge” of hosting our very first car show. Let me tell you this… it WAS NOT EASY. There were many battles and sacrifices that we had to make, but we did it for the love of the scene – “Uniting Enthusiasts.” It’s really what we do! There’s probably enough for a book to be written about the whole behind the scenes process of how we literally started from the bottom and got “here”…. but let’s just go ahead and start off with the AutoFiesta coverage. πŸ˜‰

Special shoutouts to Cody, who owns this beautiful Camaro SS. He was the FIRST person to show up at the gates the morning of the AutoFiesta. I thought he was gonna win the People’s Choice Instagram contest because he had a crapload of votes just minutes into the show. Ahh, the advantages of being early and punctual – not our culture!

We tried our best to stick to our guns on the rules of arriving at the show… 2pm – no later. I have been in numerous car shows since the early 2000’s, and everyone knows – whatever time you tell people to be somewhere on Guahan, it usually means 2 hours later. Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with that problem at the Fiesta. Pictured above is a group of 240s from Team Abunai – the car on the far left is Roswell’s 240SXccord.

Speaking of past car shows, here is Lawrence Luces’ Honda Accord from the Made to Excite car club. Lawrence is no stranger to car shows – he’s won numerous awards with this car – including 3rd Place in the 4 door Showoff category at the AutoFiesta.

Art Certeza’s unbelievably clean Lexus ISF. You might remember him as the guy who used to own that G37 who was on my Fave Five of the GU’NITEZ list I did awhile back. At the end of the night, Art looked like a crab from his suburnt skin (I saw it on Facebook chelu lol) – but it was all worth it as he took home 1st Place honors in the 4 door Showoff category.

What’s a car show without a freakin’ Nissan Skyline R32 GTR? Ryan Mafnas brought this badboy out to the Fiesta.

Make that two GTRs… This one, an R35 showcased by Nissan Guam.

A group of Z’s from the VQ Alliance. Nice touch on that license plate. GME OVR. Solid!

Also a part of the VQ Alliance, Jonathan Devera. His car was definitely one of my favorites of the show. Taking home 1st Place in the JDM Showoff category was no easy task…

Because he was up against Julien Weymouth’s madeover Honda Civic from Team Murata. I hate this car (in a good way) because it makes me want to buy another Honda and start getting me into debt again. Julien won 2nd in the JDM Showoff category.

Here’s a snippet of the car who won 3rd in the JDM Showoff, Mark Deras’ 240sx. You’ve seen this car all over the net – it’s been on StanceNation, Fatlace… yeah he’s been there and done that.

Hondas were represented well at the Fiesta – here we have a bunch of of ’em lined up from Team Ghost + our very own – Irwin’s Integra.

Here’s another shot of Irwin’s Teg. He put some work into it in the days before the show – cleaning up the bay and whatnot… We’ll be at next month’s Triple J Honda Tech meet with it… so be sure to check us out there and say what’s up!

If there’s a good thing about car shows, it’s a great way to let people know you’re selling something. lol.

Here’s Jed Espino’s Honda Civic… again, no stranger to our viewers. He’s been everywhere with this car as well – being featured in USDM Freax, a Japanese based magazine which features “USDM-themed-JDM-themed” cars… if that makes any sense. Total mindf*ck.

Dat fitment doe. Roswell’s 240 from Team Abunai.

John Borja from Made to Excite brought out his beautiful Lexus SC430 which is now on air… Drop it drop it low…

Speaking of air… Dennis Tangonan from Menace 2 Society finally finished up his Airrex/Accuair suspension… in which every time someone asks about it or talks about it…. it has to be mentioned that it was like $5,000. He was under a nice booth the night of the Fiesta – which had a steady crowd throughout the night. Great job to Dennis, Steve, and the rest of the Junction Produce Guam guys.

Sorry Dennis, this guy was lower than you. haha! Guam Road Racers Association had a small booth setup with a Gran Turismo 5 tournament at the Fiesta.

Here’s what we had under our booth – Charley Mendoza’s Acura Integra. Another well-known car not only on Guam but in the stance/fitment scene online. Charley was also kind enough to lend his services to us, serving as one of the judges and also took the initiative to be a traffic coordinator during setup.

Here’s Jerome Aguon’s custom bike from Menace 2 Society Mexico divison… Tres Delinquentes, ariba laraza!

Here’s a shot of one of the many trucks who entered the Fiesta – Ken Cruz’s Hilux from Rebello Racing. Thanks for coming out guys!

Ben Garcia’s super clean 240 took home 1st Place in the Fitment Showoff. You can read more about it on Cruising’s PDN.

I’ll go ahead and end this part of the AutoFiesta coverage with a shot of Tom Akigami’s Acura NSX. Tom took home 1st in the 2 door Showoff and also took home the Best of Show award. His build has been a long time in the making… and from what I’ve heard he’s not done yet. Pretty crazy build. Definitely one of the best the island has ever seen.

What I’ve shared with you here is just a SMALL sample of what went down at the AutoFiesta. We’ve only just passed the dinner roll and white rice portion of the buffet line. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at the AutoFiesta courtesy of the boys at Magicant Productions. They were right there with us from start to finish and I’m sure that this will be their best video ever. We’ll be right back with more…..
